The Environmental Division is designed to preserve and protect, human health and the environment on Tribal Lands and within the 1836 ceded territory.

This is done in collaboration with USEPA, IHS, and BIA. The Environmental Division addresses environmental and habitat issues on Tribal Lands and in the Ceded Territory. This includes monitoring water, air, and land for environmental degradation and issues that may impact resources needed to support fish, plants, and wildlife that are harvested for subsistence and commercial use. Special focus is given to culturally significant species and those that have historically been relied upon to ensure their health and sustainability. The Environmental Division supports tribal sovereignty by applying for delegated authority from USEPA, also known as Treatment as Sovereign (TAS).

Currently, the program is funded by a Performance Partnership Grant (PPG), IHS solid waste funds, BIA capacity-building funds, Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funds, and rights protection implementation funds.
