Hunter Advisory: Effect of Lead Ammunition on Mgizi (bald eagles)
PLEASE SEE ABOVE ADVISORY FROM SKEGEMOG RAPTOR CENTER
Cases of severe lead poisoning in bald eagles have been increasing in recent years, in most cases leading to injury or death. Eagles may be exposed to lead when eating the remains of animals which have fragments of lead ammunition in their body tissues. The Skegemog Raptor Center has been a valuable partner to the LRBOI Natural Resources Department in eagle rehabilitation.
FOR LRBOI TRIBAL HUNTERS:
Nontoxic ammunition is required when hunting migratory birds and waterfowl, but is not required for other species.
Still, the LRBOI Natural Resources Department encourages hunters of deer, bear, elk, small game, and other wildlife to consider non-lead ammunition alternatives.
The above press release provides more information on nontoxic alternatives and how to support raptor conservation.
