This program has been established to assess environmental quality on ceded territory land.

The main objective is to promote sustainable development and facilitate cleanup efforts on historically contaminated properties, such as old orchards. These land conditions are closely related to air and water quality.

Additionally, the Brownfield department develops codes and Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) while overseeing funding and cleanup processes. This ensures that land cover and land use align with environmental quality standards. The department is also focused on collecting data and mapping open dumping sites and creating regulations aimed at protecting public health, safety, and welfare.

The Brownfield program is currently funded by a CERCLA 128(a) grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

The program consists of four key elements:

1. Timely surveying and inventorying of brownfield sites.

2. Oversight and enforcement authorities, or other mechanisms and resources, that are adequate to ensure that response actions will protect human health and the environment.

3. Mechanisms and resources to provide meaningful opportunities for public participation, including outreach to the community about Brownfields and the program's achievements.

4. Mechanisms for the approval of cleanup plans and the verification of completed cleanups.

Current Activities

Some of our current activities for 2026 include Phase I environmental assessments, Phase II assessments, soil testing, and cleanups.
