Statement from Legal Services of Northern Michigan, Inc., Executive Director, Kenneth Penokie Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day

October 9, 2024

On August 2, 2024, Legal Services of Northern Michigan's Board of Directors declared Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an official program holiday in recognition of the history and contributions of  Indigenous Peoples. Legal Services of Northern Michigan proudly supports the ongoing efforts to raise awareness of the significance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Indigenous Peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories, and aspirations. These should be appropriately reflected in our public discourse and community forums. Michigan acknowledges the significant presence of the three major tribal groups in the state: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa (Odawa), and Potawatomi (Bodéwadmik). These tribes have inhabited this land since time immemorial, and their contributions to society are deeply valued.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a time to honor and celebrate the rich history and culture of Native American communities that have always been present. This day is an opportunity to show respect and appreciation for Native American communities in Michigan and across the nation.

On October 14th, Native Americans across the country and the western hemi- sphere gather in celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This day recognizes the importance of the Indigenous People who were here long before Columbus. Legal Services of Northern Michigan joins the State of Michigan in this celebration with them.
